about
In the 11th Century AD, the Norman Conquest of Britain was resisted in The Old North by the Cumbric speaking peoples of Rheged and the remnants of the Kindgom of Strathclyde.
The battles that were fought in this region are remembered by such landmarks as huge burial mounds, and the many wild flowers that grow in places such as Rannerdale, where many of the dead had fallen.
lyrics
Rise, banners of war, don your helms
Shining steel, calloused hands
Conflict born, a traitors plans
Allies of hate, from sea and land
March, masking our strength, forth to arms
Hill and vale, final stand
Sons, of Hen Ogledd, make mythic ends
You ghosts of Dunmail Raise
Charge, through broken ranks
No forlorn hope, dark arrows fly
Drawn, from fell and field
Pledged to defend, 'til kings lie under cairns
Slopes, of Rannerdale, our battleground
A scarlet dawn
Clashes of shields, join hatred and pride
Buried waist deep by the slain
Brutes from the North, proud line of Strathclyde
Slaughtering those who invade
Violence and strife, a gathering storm
Valiantly stemming the tide
Knights clad in mail, who ravaged this realm
Binding weak lords to their will
Bind me, oh glorious night
Let swing your swords
Hear fury's call, burning free
Mighty, hammers fall
By Boethor drawn
To your grave, ’neath deathly Pikes
Blood, and thunder heed my call
Let honour, cleanse our souls
For gallant men now gone
Entombed, forever more
Born to die, like none before
Savage hearts, with spears held tall
Build this mound, with valiant dead
Under shade of Helvellyn
Sunset of a darkened age
Embers from our funeral blaze
